WORLDWIDE STUDIO SCORECARD.  Fox had a great week worldwide last week ($167 million worldwide), partly from the domestic release of Gone Girl this weekend but also from strong overseas returns for The Maze Runner.  Fox is now over $4 billion for the year worldwide, the #1 Hollywood studio by far, and saddled with surprisingly few duds on its 2014 slate.  Warner Brothers also had a nice week, mostly from the domestic release of Annabelle.  Warner Brothers is now only about $100 million away from second place Disney in the worldwide box office race for the year to date.

YEAR TO DATE BOX OFFICE. Looking at North American box office, 2014 is now running -6% behind last year (better than the -7% pace last week) and -4% below the average for this point the past four years ($7.507 billion).  Over the same period, Hollywood films have grossed over $18.8 billion worldwide when we add overseas box office.

A reminder: we define the start of each year as the first Monday after New Year’s Day, and our year ends on the Sunday after New Year’s Day the following calendar year.  (The most recent week’s numbers are based on weekend estimates, which are usually at worst a couple of percentage points off from the final weekend tallies.)
