WORLDWIDE STUDIO SCORECARD. Here is an updated look at the 2018 film slates by studio. The studio totals also include 2019 dollars for films released in late 2018. We will continue to track the 2018 slates until late February, when we will switch to tracking the 2019 slates.
BOX OFFICE. Looking at North American box office, 2019 is now -17% below last year’s comparable span and now -20% below the average for this point the past four years ($0.919 billion). Over the same period, Hollywood films almost $1.9 billion worldwide when we add overseas box office for those films (that’s -31% below the comparable worldwide box office last year and -23% below 2017).
Note: The 2019 worldwide box office is currently understated by about $171 million because of overseas box office to date for films opening soon in North America: How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World ($138.7 million) & Alita: Battle Angel ($32.0 million). Those overseas dollars will be realized in the 2019 total below when the films open in the U.S. and Canada.
A reminder: we define the start of each year as the first Monday in January (except if that is New Year’s Day), and our year ends on the Sunday after New Year’s Day the following calendar year. The numbers in this chart contain box office grosses from each year’s films as well as grosses from prior year films that carried over into that year.
