Looking at wide-release films in North America (those that play on at least 400 screens at some point), 2013 now totals just over $2.7 billion, down 12% from 2012 and down 6% from the prior four-year average 2009-2012.  Each year-to-date period below is defined as the first Monday after New Year’s Day through the most recent Sunday.  The past week generated a robust $241 million in wide-release North American box office, thanks almost exclusively to Iron Man 3‘s opening.

North American Box Office YEAR TO DATE
(billions) Weeks 1-17
2012 $3.076 Jan 2-Apr 29
2010 $2.995 Jan 4-May 2
2009 $2.910 Jan 5-May 3
2013 $2.718 Jan 7-May 5
2011 $2.588 Jan 3-May 1

Over the past six weeks, 2013 has picked up the pace (now 4% ahead of the 2009-2012 average for the comparable period).  Compared to 2012, the past six weeks are still 3% behind last year’s brisk pace (although that’s an improvement over the 10-15% deficits versus 2012 that we’ve seen the past few months).

North American Box Office LAST SIX WEEKS
(millions) Weeks 12-17
2012 $1,061 Mar 19-Apr 29
2013 $1,026 Mar 25-May 5
2009 $993 Mar 23-May 3
2011 $954 Mar 21-May 1
2010 $949 Mar 22-May 2

And beginning this week, we will track the year to date performance of each major and mini-major studio.  The list below is ranked by worldwide box office for films released since January 1 of this year.  Disney is off to a rousing start thanks to Iron Man 3 and Oz, while Fox is a legitimate #2 (particularly because of the strong overseas appeal of its slate).  Universal has the second-highest domestic total for 2013 so far, but the studio is ranked fourth in terms of worldwide gross (thanks to a really poor overseas performance).  Although Sony has out-grossed Summit domestically so far this year, Summit has more than made up the difference overseas.
