UPDATED — WORLD CUP SKEDBALL: Knockout Stage Opens Big

Ratings for Sunday’s ESPN matches show that the Knockout Stage (starting with the Round of 16) is off to a great start.  The Netherlands vs Mexico match at 11:30 am Sunday averaged 5.7 million persons 2+ watching ESPN on television, while the 3:30 pm Costa Rica vs Greece match (settled by a shoot-out) hit 5.9 million viewers (making them the #5 and #4 matches out of 50 so far, behind only the three matches featuring the US team).  These initial Knockout matches compare very favorably to the 2010 Knockout Stage Average on ESPN (bolded in the table below): about 2.8 million viewers 2+ and under 2 demo ratings.

UPDATE: Ratings for the Monday matches on ESPN are in.  The early (11:30 am) window (France vs Nigeria) averaged 2.5 million viewers and ranks only #29 out of 52 matches so far.  But that particular time period weekdays is incredibly tough (see daypart summary in table below).  In contrast, the 3:30 pm match Monday (Germany vs Algeria) ranks at #9 with 4.3 million viewers.  Although we do not have ESPN’s streaming numbers on their app and site, it would be far to say that most of that gap between 4.3 million TV viewers on a Monday and 5.9 million viewers on a Sunday is made up by people streaming at the office or otherwise away from home.
