UPDATED: WORLD CUP SKEDBALL (Final Weekend Ratings)

Updated: The ABC ratings for daytime last Sunday are finally in and the 224-minute telecast of the FIFA World Cup Final (from 2:00-5:44 pm ET) averaged over 14 million viewers, making it the #1 match of 2014 on English-language television, slightly ahead of three USA matches (#2 USA vs Portugal on June 22 with 13,774,000 total viewers, #3 Belgium vs USA on July 1 with 13,440,000 viewers and #4 USA vs Ghana on June 16 with 9,772,000 total viewers).  Demographically, the final match on Sunday was #2 overall with adults 18-49 and men 18-49 and #3 with men 18-34.  USA vs Portugal on June was #1 with adults 18-49 (5.41 rating) and men 1849 (6.84), while men 18-34 turned in larger audiences for USA vs Portugal (#1 overall with 6.59 rating) and Belgium vs USA (#2 overall with 6.13 rating).  Still Sunday’s final contest was a solid end to a well-rated World Cup.

Earlier: Ratings for Saturday’s loser consolation game between Netherlands and Brazil were predictably squishy: below average for a Knockout Stage match (4.2 million viewers Saturday versus the 5.4 million average for 2014 Knockout matches to date) and even below the Saturday afternoon average for the entire 2014 tournament (4.7 million).  Of course, soccer fans waited until Sunday to see the championship game, but you will have to wait another few days for those ratings, when the broadcast network ratings for “fringe” (non-prime time) dayparts are released Thursday morning.  The ABC persons 2+ number should be about three times larger than the Saturday consolation game audience (based on the metered-market overnight ratings), putting the ABC audience in the 13 million range, about equaling a match involving the US and continuing the growth for the World Cup event.
