The Past Week: Total Box Office Volume

All films in wide release playing between September 3 and September 9 grossed a low $104 million, down 14% from both the four-year average for the week and the same week last year.  The past six weeks are now down 4% from the four-year average box office average and down a more significant 10% from the same six-week period last year.  Year to date box office (now over $7.25 billion for wide-release films) continues to cling to a 5% gain ahead of both last year and the average for the past four years.

Weekend Actuals versus Studio Estimate

The Words came in officially at $4,750,894 today for its opening weekend, down a big 5.0% from the CBS Films estimate for the weekend Sunday morning.  

The Cold Light of Day came in at $1,831,588 in its opening weekend, up 1.8% from the studio estimate.

Oogieloves in the BIG Balloon Adventure came in at $43,854 total for its second weekend (down a record 90.1% from its record low opening).  The film played in 281 theaters in weekend two (amazing there were that many takers), where it averaged $156 per theater for the weekend.

Weekend Predictions September 14-16 should be posted Wednesday.  This weekend features the openings of Resident Evil: Retribution and the 3D re-release of Finding Nemo.
