Weekend Studio Estimates 12.19-21.2014

Based on Friday’s and Saturday’s grosses, weekend #51 of 2014 now looks like $127 million for the top 12 films Friday-Sunday, up slightly from yesterday’s estimate ($126 million) and now up 5% from the norm for this weekend ($121 million) but down -8% from the same weekend last year.

Continuing at 3,875 theaters, The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies from Warner Brothers is now on track for a $56.2 million opening three-day weekend (slightly better than it looked yesterday but still below our $64.5 million ShowBuzzDaily forecast earlier this week). The film is pacing toward $14,500 per theater for the weekend (compared to the $5,333 opening weekend average for all wide-release films the last two years). Including Wednesday and Thursday, the film should total $90.6 million through Sunday for the first five days (also well below our $110 million forecast).  Critical sentiment is somewhat positive (61% positive overall and 49% positive with top critics). Battle of the Five Armies is headed for $229 million total domestic.

Opening at 3,785 theaters, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb from 20th Century Fox is now on track for a $17.3 million opening three-day weekend (worse than it looked yesterday and well below our $27.0 million forecast). The film is pacing toward a below average $4,600 per theater for the weekend. Critical sentiment is split (49% positive overall and 50% positive with top critics). Night at the Museum 3 is headed for $98 million total domestic.

Opening at 3,116 theaters, Annie from Sony is now on track for a $16.3 million opening three-day weekend (worse than yesterday’s estimate and now a touch below our $17.5 million forecast). The film is pacing toward a mediocre $5,200 per theater for the weekend. Critical sentiment is very weak (28% positive overall and 16% positive with top critics), but the audience reportedly gave it an A- CinemaScore (although that methodology tends to be skewed positively since the sample is strangely restricted to opening night audiences only ). Annie is headed for $89 million total domestic.
