THURSDAY NIGHT BOX OFFICE: “The Marked Ones” Kicks Off 2014

The franchise spin-off PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE MARKED ONES (Paramount) pulled in $1.2M at 10PM shows last night.  That was far below the $4.5M that Paranormal Activity 4 made on its Thursday in October 2012, but it was on par with the $1.15M earned by Texas Chainsaw when it opened on the first Thursday of January 2013.  Chainsaw went on to make $10.2M on Friday and $21.7M for the weekend (with an overall total of $34.3M).  Those kinds of numbers would put Marked Ones well below any of the previous Paranormal Activity movies (the first had a gradual release, but the other installments started with weekends at $40.7M, $52.6M, and $29M), however this is the first entry to open in January, and its marketing has been relatively narrowly targeted to the Latino audience.  In any case, with the franchise’s usual rock-bottom production cost, it should have no trouble turning a profit.
