>American Idol resumed its downward drift (after a brief uptick last week) and Touch set a new low, but FOX still won the night with CBS in repeats and ABC and NBC in originals.

             Nightly Adult 18-49 Rating
Thursday     FOX    NBC    CBS    ABC
04.19.2012   3.0    1.4    1.8    2.2   THIS WEEK
04.12.2012   3.3    1.4    2.4    2.1   LAST WEEK
04.21.2011   4.5    2.1    1.8    1.1   LAST YEAR

Like the Wednesday performance edition, last night’s results edition of American Idol was back down to the low of two weeks ago.  The 3.9 fast national rating with Adults 18-49 will probably go up to to a 4.0 in the official nationals, just above the season low.  In contrast, Touch has a good chance to decline in the official nationals (from a 2.1 to a 2.0).  But even if it does not decline, it still will be a series low.  Against mostly repeats on CBS, FOX still won the night last night, although it’s down to a 3.0 rating from 8-10 pm.  Last year on this night, FOX averaged a 4.5 rating from 8-10 pm: American Idol (5.8) and Bones (3.2).

                Season        Past  Six  Weeks
FOX Thu        High Low  3.15 3.22 3.29 4.05 4.12 4.19

Bones          3.3  2.4
The Finder     2.8  1.7

CBS had another night of repeats last night, but it returned to its normal two-comedy, two-drama format (moving the Thursday night rating to a 1.8, down significantly from last week’s 2.4 rating with four comedies and one drama).  Given the CBS strength with comedies (even when they are repeats), the network has all the evidence it needs to build a powerhouse four-comedy block on Thursday next fall.  Last year on this night: Big Bang Theory repeat (1.8), Rules of Engagement repeat (1.5), CSI repeat (1.6) and The Mentalist repeat (2.1).

                 Season        Past  Six  Weeks
CBS Thu         High Low  3.15 3.22 3.29 4.05 4.12 4.19

Mentalist       3.0  2.4            2.7  2.4       1.5R

ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy had a good night, its best rating since February 16.  And if Grey’s goes up to a 3.3 rating in the official nationals, it will be the best number since February 9.  Scandal posted another 2.1 rating in the fast nationals, although that could very likely round down to a 2.0 in the official nationals, which would be the same rating for three weeks in a row.  Last year on this night: Wipeout repeat (1.3), Grey’s Anatomy repeat (1.2) and Private Practice repeat (0.8).

Parks & Recreation returned to NBC Thursday last night with a 1.8 rating at 9:30, about the same as it was doing at 8:30 pm earlier this season.  Awake is headed for a new low, now a 0.8 rating.  Last year on this night: Community (1.4), Paul Reiser Show — the second and final episode (0.9), The Office (3.3), Parks & Recreation (2.4), 30 Rock (2.2) and 30 Rock (2.2).
