SHOWBUZZDAILY SUNDAY NETWORK SCORECARD – 9.13.2020

As was the case on Thursday, SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL returned big but not as big as it’s been.

DEMOGRAPHIC DETAIL: For each broadcast program (or hour segment), the chart below displays preliminary live+same day key advertiser demographics (adult 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54 ratings), audience skews (women 18-49, men 18-49 and adults 50+ shares) and total viewership (thousands of people over the age of 2).

Ratings analysis and comparisons follow the chart.

ABC:  Reruns at 0.3-0.4.

CBS:  60 MINUTES, boosted by local football lead-ins, jumped 0.5 to 0.9.  BIG BROTHER gained 0.2 to 1.0, and a 2-hour LOVE ISLAND was up 0.1 to 0.5.

NBC:  The preliminary rating for the SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL season premiere was 4.9, down a notable 1.7 from last year’s premiere.  That game rose 0.9 in final numbers.

FOX:  After the end of the late national NFL game and its post-game show, a preview special for the new season of THE MASKED SINGER was at 1.3, and a 2020 FOX FALL PREVIEW special was at 0.6.  A FAMILY GUY rerun ended the night at 0.4.

CW:  The season finale of FRIDGE WARS was steady at 0.1, followed by a SUPERNATURAL rerun at 0.1.

Tonight, DANCING WITH THE STARS and MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL have their season premieres on ABC and ESPN, and HBO launches the dramas THE THIRD DAY and WE ARE WHAT WE ARE.

COMPARISONS TO SIMILAR NIGHTS: Preliminary adult 18-49 live+same day ratings versus the same night last year and same night last week.

Note: The fast affiliate-based ratings below measure what aired on network affiliates in 210 U.S. markets from 8-11 pm Eastern & Pacific or 7-10 pm Central & Mountain. The numbers are some combination of the network schedule and any pre-emptions (such as local news or weather coverage). Also live events such as sporting events and major specials are usually undercounted because the fast nationals measure what was on in primetime in the Pacific Time Zone (mostly what aired after the live event ended on the West Coast). Accurate program ratings will be available Tuesday morning with the broadcast finals.

CABLE RATINGS: Come back this afternoon for detailed demographic ratings for top Friday cable programs. Saturday & Sunday cable ratings and broadcast finals will be posted Tuesday morning.

SNF seems to be about a full ratings point behind last year. But I think these football preliminaries often adjust up a bit.

Perhaps teams walking off the field for the anthem may be turning away viewers?

I, for one, will not watch any game where the team walks off the field for the anthem. I respected and supported John Lewis’s application of “good trouble” which seemed to foster empathy and unity. I just don’t think walking off the field for the anthem represents “good trouble”. It’s just too divisive.
