On the last night affected by a Presidential Debate this election cycle, NBC stayed on top with a 3.8 preliminary rating with Adults 18-49. (The night featured 90 minutes of commercially-rated programming: an hour of The Voice and a half hour at 10:30 of debate analysis from NBC News.) FOX should come in second place with Game 7 of the NLCS. The 2.1 fast national rating for the game should go up to a 2.7 in the official nationals.
ABC earned a 2.3 rating last night in the fast nationals, although that will come down to about a 2.1 in the official ratings (see Monday Night Football note below). Meanwhile, CBS was an atypical fourth place (all the way down to a 2.0 for the night with two repeat comedies and a half hour of news analysis).
ESPN’s Monday Night Football (Detroit at Chicago) had some impact on the ABC fast nationals. In Detroit (market #11, 1.6% of the US), the game was carried over the air on ABC’s WXYZ 7. In Chicago (market #3, 3.1% of the US), the game ran on independent WCIU 26.

NBC dominated Monday by being able to keep The Voice on (for an hour at least), achieving a 4.2 rating with young adults at 8 pm and powering NBC News to the network of choice for the final Presidential Debate. The 10:30 NBC News analysis of the debate (which will count in the official ratings) posted a preliminary 3.1 rating, tops among the news divisions .

CBS went with repeat comedies from 8-9 pm, and the network placed different comedies than usually play at 8:00 and 8:30 so the telecasts will be counted as “specials” and not be part of the network’s “regularly scheduled” average for the season. The 10:30 CBS News analysis only earned a 1.8 rating (the lowest of the network news divisions by far) despite the fact that CBS’s own Bob Schieffer moderated the debate.

ABC’s Dancing with the Stars looks like a 2.4 in the fast nationals but that number will come down because ABC’s station in Detroit carried Monday Night Football instead. The 2.2 fast national rating for the ABC News analysis will also decline to around a 2.0 from 10:30-11:00.

FOX aired a Game 7 and it looks like it will earn a 2.7 in the official nationals when the Bay Area and the rest of the Pacific time zone are properly counted (based on our adjustment up from the 2.1 fast national rating). A 2.7 rating — better than the misery so for this fall Mondays on FOX with Bones and The Mob Doctor but still under last fall’s Terra Nova and House combo.
As recently as 2009, the highest rated LCS game of that year was a 5.1 rating. In 2007, the peak LCS game was a 6.7 rating, and you only have to go back to 2004 to find an LCS peak of 11.8. That is one sustained, stunning fall from grace for the sport.
