The Voice on NBC took a haircut to a mid-4 rating with young adults, as ABC’s Dancing with the Stars premiered with a mid-3 rating, a decent rating compared to other programs (especially during this horrific season) but that premiere is down a third from last year.

NBC took another hit on The Voice (thanks to the return of Dancing with the Stars in the time period), but Smash proved to be relatively resilient.  The Voice from 8-10 pm averaged a 4.5, a new season low for the series but still #1 in the slot.  The Voice started with a 4.0 in the 8:00 half hour, building to a 4.5 at 8:30 and flattening out at a 4.6 at 9:00 before ending with a 4.9 at 9:30.  The happiest campers are the American Idol producers, who are thinking they can compete with this new level for The Voice if it holds there.  Despite having a vastly lower lead-in last night, Smash was only down one tenth of a rating point from last week (to a 2.3 rating for the 10 pm hour).  Against original episodes of the CBS and ABC dramas, Smash finished in third place (though only one tenth out of second place and two tenths out of first place).  By half hour, Smash was a 2.3 in the 10:00 half hour and a  2.2 in the 10:30 half hour.  The Broadway musical drama really seems to be solidifying around a low-2 rating.  Last year on this night: Chuck (1.5), The Event (1.2) and Harry’s Law (1.6).

Dancing with the Stars premiered from 8-10 pm with a 3.5 rating with young adults, down a hefty 34% from a 5.3 on the same night last year.  At 10 pm Castle averaged a 2.4 rating, better than recent weeks but still toward the low end of this season’s range and way down from the same night last season.  Last year on this night, ABC averaged a 4.6 rating: Dancing with the Stars (5.3) and Castle (3.1).

CBS was back with original episodes last night, although the 8-9 pm comedies and Hawaii Five-O set or tied season lows as NBC and ABC battled for the hearts and minds of competition reality viewers.  Two and a Half Men and Mike & Molly last night look to be a few tenths above their season lows.  Last year on this night, CBS was an original-episode night with the notable exception of the star-less Two and a Half MenHow I Met Your Mother (3.0), Mad Love (2.4), Two and a Half Men repeat (2.7), Mike & Molly (3.0) and Hawaii Five-O (2.9).
