THE SKED 2013 UPFRONTS: CBS Featurette – “We Are Men”

The CBS featurette for its new Monday 8:30PM comedy WE ARE MEN is at great pains to suggest that the cast–Chris Smith, Tony Shalhoub, Jerry O’Connell and Kal Penn, as divorcees who live in the same residential hotel–has as much fun together behind the camera as in front of it.  The bigger question is how much fun we’ll have watching them.

Based on the bits of footage in this featurette, it’s hard to figure out how this fits on CBS’s Monday nights.  It’s a strictly guy-oriented show on a night that’s either rom-com (How I Met Your Mother) or feature female leads (2 Broke Girls, Mom), it’s the only single-camera show in the quartet, and–well, it doesn’t look very funny, just (very, very) watered down Judd Apatow male bonding.  It’s not a good sign when the comedy that comes to mind here is ABC’s flop Man Up.  The cast is certainly talented, and maybe when the pilot is seen as a whole, it’ll all come together.  But the signs aren’t auspicious.
