THE SKED 2013 UPFRONTS: ABC Midseason Trailer – “Mixology”

Another TBD for ABC’s midseason:  the high-concept comedy MIXOLOGY.  The entire season takes place in a single night, at a bar where 10 single people are looking for love (or a close substitute), which–if things don’t go well–has the potential of feeling like one long night.  Think of it as a sitcom 24, but with more alcohol and less Jack Bauer.

The problem with trying to judge a project like this via a trailer–or for that matter, even a full pilot–is that a given half-hour of it is going to look and feel like any other sitcom about single people at a bar.  There’s the Lothario bartender who has so many women in his life he can’t remember the name of the one who’s breaking up with him, the newly-single guy who’s trying to get back into the game, the drunk who vomits into somebody’s purse, and so on.   If Mixology is going to be special, it’ll be in the way the episodes, and the characters, fit together over time, and we won’t know that until there’s more than one to watch.  For now, the show seems amiable enough, without any character showing signs of being a particular breakout, and one hopes the writers (who were behind the original Hangover) can do better than vomit jokes as the show goes on.
