SUNDAY SPORTS.  The calm before the storm of next week’s Super Bowl Sunday: the most watched sporting event of the year, the most watched telecast of the year, and the most viewed day of the year.  A kind of typical winter Sunday with two NBA games on ABC and a golf tournament on CBS with Tiger Woods in the lead (each in the 3.7 to 4.9 Household rating range in the 70% of the country covered by the 56 markets with local Nielsen meters).  At 7:00 pm Sunday the golf tournament was not finished.  In most of the country (Eastern, Central and Mountain time zones) CBS switched from golf to 60 Minutes, while coverage of the weather-delayed Farmers Open golf tournament continued on the Golf Channel (dropping from a 3.7 rating on CBS to a 1.5 rating on Golf Channel).  There was no way the tournament could be finished Sunday — the final holes were played Monday afternoon.

Last year, with Tiger Woods not in contention, the Farmers Open on CBS earned only a 2.0 rating on Sunday.   Tiger continues to support the PGA single-handedly.

Local Market Ratings — Sunday

OKC turned in terrific home-market ratings for their Thunder versus the Lakers, an 18.9 household rating.  Los Angeles and Miami were respectable with a little over a 10 rating each for their team’s game, but Boston were not there for the Celtics: a pitiful 5.4 household rating for their game.

ABC 1:00 Sun MIA 10.1 22 BOS 5.4 13
ABC 4:15 Sun OKC 18.9 31 LA 10.3 22

SATURDAY SPORTS.  Still not much to see in the Saturday afternoon sports time period in late January.  The CBS coverage of the golf tournament would have been higher than a 1.6 rating if there had been actual third-round play instead of scenes of a fogged-in Torrey Pines and clips from past tournaments.  But fog coverage still outpaced Free Dance and Pairs coverage of Figure Skating on NBC.
