UPDATED: SHOWBUZZDAILY’s Top 150 Tuesday Cable Originals & Network Finals: 4.14.2020

 

 

 

 

NETWORK FINALS:  NCIS gained 0.1 in final numbers, and the NEW AMSTERDAM season finale, the NBC NEWS special and the 10PM FBI MOST WANTED lost the same.

CABLE HIGHLIGHTS:  History’s CURSE OF OAK ISLAND led Tuesday cable, steady at 0.67, and SECRETS OF SKINWALKER RANCH was down 0.03 to 0.32.  Cable news was topped by Fox News’s SPECIAL REPORT WITH BRET BAIER at 0.61/0.92/5.5M, with CNN’s ERIN BURNETT OUTFRONT at 0.48/0.68/2.7M, and MSNBC’s RACHEL MADDOW SHOW at 0.27/0.46/3.2M.  Bravo’s VANDERPUMP RULES slipped 0.02 to 0.46.  Discovery’s THE DEADLIEST CATCH returned at 0.45/0.40.  MTV’s TEEN MOM ticked down to 0.35.  On TLC, LITTLE PEOPLE, BIG WORLD was steady at 0.33, and 7 LITTLE JOHNSTONS was up 0.03 to 0.24.  On Food Network, SUPERMARKET STAKEOUT ticked down to 0.27, and CHOPPED was down 0.07 to 0.26.  On HGTV, BARGAIN MANSIONS was at 0.25, HOUSE HUNTERS rose 0.02 to 0.19, and HOUSE HUNTERS INTL was down 0.03 to 0.16.  A&E’s THE FIRST 48 was at 0.23/0.21 compared to last week’s 0.19/0.18.  TBS’s THE LAST OG held at 0.23.  Paramount’s INK MASTER edged up 0.02 to 0.21.  OWN’s IF LOVING YOU IS WRONG gained 0.02 to 0.20.  On ID, DIABOLICAL ticked up to 0.18, and REASONABLE DOUBT was steady at 0.16.  VH1’s WILD N OUT lost 0.02 to 0.14.  Pop’s ONE DAY AT A TIME stayed at 0.07.

    Do you have the Sesame Street special at 7 PM on TBS, Boomerang, and HBO? It was also simulcasted there, thanks.

    New Amsterdam seems to have its own audience and could survive a move away from Tuesday. But as the show is sitting on a three season renewal it’s highly unlikely NBC would make such a bold move.

    Until the day I die I will never understand why an 18-49 demo carries so much weight over 25-54, or even total viewers….and I work in marketing & advertising. How a show with a .75 18-49 demo and .40 25-54 demo, with 1M viewers, can top a show with a .74 18-49 demo .60 25-54 demo with 4M viewers makes no sense. Pretty much, the “ratings” are arbitrarily made up and mean nothing…outside of a few clueless ad execs who still believe in teen to adult brand loyalty.

      Some years ago, 60 Minutes did a story that basically pointed out that those older than 49 still have buying power that appears dismissed by advertisers. I forget some of the details, but it was pointed that they have saved income, pensions, etc. They buy for themselves, younger family members, and friends plus often want, if not need, to know the latest trends and products to consider to do so

      I think the consensus is that younger people are more easily swayed (gullible) and not set in their ways being devoted to only certain products and services that older viewers become accustomed to. I guess you could add that older viewers have more buying and savings experience that younger people do not have that could be taken advantage of too.

    One Day at a Time did not air on TV Land this week in a simulcast with POP, did it? If so, I wonder if the people who watched on TV Land the first two weeks are wondering what happened to their show. I no longer get POP due to a cable downgrade and it’s likely many others do not get it in their lower tier service either, but I, and probably those others, still get TV Land although it is not in HD.

    The combined simulcast rating was around 0.15 and is now cut in half. If this were on TV Land, and not on POP, would the rating be 0.7 or so, or would it jump to around 0.15 with POP viewers moving to TV Land to watch? It’s an interesting question to consider.

    It’s also strange that a reboot of a classic show is not on a network that actually is supposed to be for classic TV. Would it not be better for them to have stuff like this than failed experiments like Impastor?

      One Day’s numbers make me wonder who many (or less) viewers you need on Netflix to make it into 3 seasons. Netflix claimed it to be so popular, but only 160.000 viewers want to watch it same day on cable tv?

        I wondered the same about Netflix. I am not sure how they figure what shows are successes and failures. Do you have to watch an episode for three minutes, the whole episode, watch all episodes within a week to ten days, what?

        As to the 160k viewers, remember what I noted about people who get TV Land in their cable package may not get POP. POP, for Comcast, is in their top tier package. TV Land can be had in their Digital Economy package, which just one up from Limited Basic and therefore more affordable. However, it is only in standard definition, not HD. We’ve never had an HD version of the channel, but briefly were able to get HD episodes of Hot in Cleveland On Deamnd some years ago. Of course, you do not need HD, as no classic shows were done that way.

      It’s being shown on TV Land today (Thu 16) at 8 ET/5 PT. I wonder if it’ll register in the Top 150.

      I agree with your second paragraph – how would it do purely on TV Land? The 18-49 demo on TV Land has been higher than Pop (although Pop’s has grown while TV Land’s has stabilised; Pop went .04 -> .06 -> .07 -> .07, TV Land .07 -> .08 -> .08). Given the viewership on Pop barely moved for this week’s episode (up just 70k), I’m assuming those who don’t get Pop were watching it on TV Land (and so weren’t just watching it on TV Land cos they didn’t like Pop but because it was the only way they could watch it, at least on TV), and also assuming from that TV Land has wider coverage than Pop, so those watching it on Pop wouldn’t necessarily lose access to the show should it move to TV Land? There would probably be some audience erosion in the process but I suspect it would probably be around .10 and ~400k.

      I’m not very au fait with US cable ratings in particular (I’m from the UK), so I don’t know how ODAAT’s performance fares in relation to Pop and TV Land’s normal ratings (although given I can’t see any TV Land in the Top 150 I’m assuming ODAAT is one of its top performers), but if the audience for the show (500k+ combined across the two networks) is considered low the proposed repeats of it on CBS in the summer might add at least another two million or so to those figures (which would be low for CBS but might be vital in securing the future of the series). It’s probably worth another go around but I suppose international distribution may have to be factored in (which I’m actually not sure s4 has been shown outside the US at all yet).

        it’s been averaging over 400k viewers on TV Land too – it will definitely make the top 150 tonight – will net at least a .07
