    No, Disney Channel!

    How do you go from 0.40/1.66M, 0.31/1.48M, and 0.27/1.47M on July 28 to 0.28/1.20M, 0.24/1.02M, and 0.20/1.01M on August 4?

    • Amaury

      In order in case it’s not clear: Raven’s Home, K.C. Undercover, and Bizaardvark.

    • Destiny

      I’m not familiar with the shows above Raven on the chart, but was Ravens Home not the highest rated scripted original airing on Friday this week? That’s something.

      • Amaury

        Point. The chart is ordered by the general 18–49 demographic, and all three Disney Channel premieres were pretty high in the chart, but since kid networks look more at their targeted audience, which is 2–11, and total viewers, that’s pretty low in regard to total viewers. Nowadays, for kid networks, 1.5M+ is considered great. However, without being able to see the 2–11 audience, which I kind of wish had its own column, I guess we can’t really know how well Disney Channel—or any kid network—does with 100% accuracy. And if there were a 2–11 column, we would also need to know what’s considered good, similar to how you mentioned a 0.4 18–49 demographic rating being good enough for a renewal on the broadcast and adult-oriented cable networks.

        • Amaury

          It’s also summer, when ratings aren’t the highest, no matter the network. For 50+ years, we’ve been trained to not expect much original programming during the summer, so naturally that mindset was developed and people knew to plan to do other things.

          I’m just paraphrasing what a friend of mine on Wikipedia said above when I asked him why ratings are always down in the summer. If you’re interested in the whole reply: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:IJBall#Summertime_ratings

        • Destiny

          Oh I’m sorry, to clarify that 0.4 rating being good enough for renewal on most networks was in reference to cable shows. Plenty of shows do get renewed with a 0.3 and below, I just consider a 0.4 a safe level.

          You also make some good points, Fridays in general are just so dull for ratings. I think the show did well to stay at this level.

      • Russell

        All of the shows (except Live PD) have more of a built in audience, especially Teen Titans Go. But Raven’s Home should start to stabilize next week.

        • Destiny

          You could be right. I think we should be looking at the shows numbers from Episode 2 onward. It’s not really fair for anyone to judge based on the Descendants 2 boosted premiere as it was never going to keep at that level.

          As things stand now I can see the show renewed by Disney.

          • Amaury

            @Destiny: Agreed. Almost all of Disney Channel’s new shows premiered following a DCOM, so a drop is always to be expected in the subsequent episodes. (How big the drop is and if episodes stay consistent around that drop number is what’s important.) It’s just now that regular episodes are in the 1.00M–2.00M range compared to, say, 2.00M–3.50M back in 2014, it seems worse. Even in Disney Channel’s glorier days, the second episodes always dropped.

            Some examples, using the first five episodes, including the premiere:
            * Austin & Ally: 5.66M -> 3.96M -> 3.40M -> 2.99M -> 2.81M
            * Liv and Maddie: 5.78M -> 3.60M -> 3.00M -> 2.94M -> 3.18M
            * Girl Meets World: 5.16M -> 3.23M -> 2.64M -> 3.28M -> 2.79M

            Similar to currency inflation, things are different now. 2.50M now is probably equivalent to about 5.00M back in 2013 for kid networks like Nickelodeon and Disney Channel. Back then, getting under 4.00M was considered bad, but not anymore.

          • Destiny

            @It’s just now that regular episodes are in the 1.00M–2.00M range

            So many scripted shows on cable are around this level that it feels like the new normal to me. Networks are happy to renew at this level too(Even under a million if the 18-49 is good).

            It’s evident that the overall decline in live viewers that we’ve all seen on broadcast has carried over to cable.

  2. Destiny

    Room 104 seems to be around the level Insecure was at during its first season. That should get it renewed. Friday is a much tougher day than Sunday for scripted.

  3. Russell

    Raven’s Home Ratings so far:
    7/21 – 0.81 A18-49, 2.25 in F12-34

    7/28 – 0.40 A18-49, 0.91 in F12-34

    8/4 – 0.28 A18-49, 0.64 in F12-34

    It’s doing pretty well in Disney’s target demo of girls 12-34.

    • Destiny

      I’m sure someone will point out that it has dropped in all the key demos, but I think it’s just the Friday effect. It should stabilize soon.

      • Amaury

        What exactly is this Friday effect you keep mentioning, and why are they boring? And have they always been boring even when networks like Disney Channel were getting 2.00M+ on Fridays? Thanks in advance.

        • Destiny

          I’ll keep this short, but basically Friday just isn’t a day you’d expect good ratings from. CBS uses as a syndication farm for its scripted, the other broadcast nets just use like a lesser day for shows that have little life left in them.

          The day is generally dull because the ratings are just so lifeless outside of the usual shows/networks. No-one really takes the news well that their show has moved to Fridays either lol. It’s a step above Saturday for shows.

          I think Raven’s Home would perform better on a different day.

          • Amaury

            Disney Channel used to have premieres on Fridays and Sundays for their live-action series; now it’s just Fridays as of this year.
