OPENING NIGHT BOX OFFICE: The Age of Ultron Begins

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON (Marvel/Disney) blasted off with $27.6M from Thursday night screenings, handily beating the $18.7M for the first Avengers, although that blockbuster began its showings at midnight, while Ultron started its run at 7PM.  Ultron was also far above the $15.8M earned by Furious 7 in its Thursday night debut.  Sequels are expected to be more frontloaded than the first in a series, so it’s hard to extrapolate much from these numbers in terms of the movie’s weekend results, except for the unsurprising conclusion that it’s going to be huge.

With quite a few major territories still to open (including China), Ultron is also at $287.3M overseas, and its worldwide box office will be well over half a billion dollars by Sunday.
