FULL WEEK BOX OFFICE ACTUALS MAY 16-22: Up Week Versus Last Year

The past week came in up 10% versus last year’s comparable week.  Year-to-date box office is now down 12% versus last year.   

The Past Week: Total Box Office Volume
All films in wide release playing between May 16 and May 22 grossed $202 million, up 10% versus the same week in 2010.  Year to date, all films are down 2% from the comparable four-year average and now down 12% from 2010’s box office numbers (the year-to-year comparison is one percentage point better this week).

Updated Estimates of Final Grosses
The ShowbuzzDaily Domestic Grosses (the estimated North American gross when the film ends its run) are now: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ($254, 96th percentiles of all wide release movies the past two years),  Fast Five ($206 million, 94th percentile), Thor ($195 million, 94th percentile), Rio ($145 million, 89th percentile), Bridesmaids ($121 million, 85th percentile).

Weekend Actuals vs Yesterday’s Studio Projections

The studio generally nailed it on Sunday — their weekend Studio Projections (Friday and Saturday actual numbers with estimates for Sunday’s box office) were almost exactly what the actual weekend numbers were today.
