Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol remains at the top of the box office, and the other sequels (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked) are just behind.  After that, the non-sequels are finding it tough to break out.  Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has the best chance of breaking $100 million domestically, while the Steven Spielberg duo of War Horse and Adventures of Tintin are really fading.  Overall, box office is decent if not spectacular: the $50 million in business Friday for the top 10 films is a normal figure for December 30.

Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol (the fourth in the M:I series) grossed $10.6 million Friday (up from $9.7 million last Friday) and is looking like $29.7 million from Friday-Sunday, compared to a forecast of $31.2 million.  Through Sunday, the film’s domestic total should stand above $132 million, and it should finish with $210 million domestically when it leaves theaters.  (This would be just behind the $215 million for M:I 2 but above the $181 million for M:I and the $134 million for M:I 3.)

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked both are coming in at forecast this weekend.  Sherlock 2 is headed for about  $180 million domestic, while Alvin 3 is on track for $135 million.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo should exceed its weekend forecast by about $1 million ($15.2 million versus a forecast of $14.0 million) and should be able to break $100 million domestically when it ends its run.

Steven Spielberg is having a disappointing weekend with both War Horse and The Adventures of Tintin running behind modest forecasts.  War Horse should collect $12.4 Friday-Sunday ($15.5 million forecast), while Tintin, the “beloved” creation of Belgian artist Herge, is struggling to get to $11.3 million Friday-Sunday ($13.5 million forecast).  Both films are headed for around $80 million domestic.
