FRIDAY 12.19.2014 Box Office Report

Based on Friday’s grosses, weekend #51 of 2014 looks like $126 million for the top 12 films Friday-Sunday, up 4% from the norm for this weekend ($121 million) but down -8% from the same weekend last year.

Continuing at 3,875 theaters, The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies from Warner Brothers grossed $16.6 million Friday and is on track for a $54.0 million opening three-day weekend (below our $64.5 million ShowBuzzDaily forecast earlier this week). The film is pacing toward $13,900 per theater for the weekend (compared to the $5,333 opening weekend average for all wide-release films the last two years). Including Wednesday and Thursday, the film should total $88.4 million through Sunday for the first five days (also well below our $110 million forecast).  Critical sentiment is somewhat positive (61% positive overall and 49% positive with top critics). Battle of the Five Armies is headed for $223 million total domestic.

Opening at 3,785 theaters, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb from 20th Century Fox grossed $5.6 million Friday and is on track for a $19.2 million opening three-day weekend (below our $27.0 million forecast). The film is pacing toward a very average $5,100 per theater for the weekend. Critical sentiment is split (49% positive overall and 50% positive with top critics). Night at the Museum 3 is headed for $103 million total domestic.

Opening at 3,116 theaters, Annie from Sony grossed $5.3 million Friday and is on track for a $17.5 million opening three-day weekend (hitting our $17.5 million forecast). The film is pacing toward $5,600 per theater for the weekend. Critical sentiment is very weak (28% positive overall and 16% positive with top critics), but the audience reportedly is giving it an A- CinemaScore (and that should help drown out the bad reviews). Annie is headed for $90 million total domestic.
